There are approximately 2,000 residents plus, of course, children. We are sited roughly 6 miles from Dover and about 10 miles from Canterbury in the County of Kent.

Elvington was originally a 'Pit Village' and the houses were erected for the miners and their families. With the closure of Tilmanstone mine, like most other 'Pit villages' it now has a variety of residents with most properties being local Council properties. It also has a Community Centre, built through grants, which has a Health Centre in it, Computer rooms, Youth Clubs and adjacent to it on the Playing Field a Multi Use Games Area which was again erected through grants. A play area which consists of a Skate ramp and small children's play equipment is also located at Adelaide Road. There is an excellent Sports Pavillion situated adjacent to the School, this is run by the Miners Welfare Scheme (name is in the process of changing) and management was given to them by CISWO when the Colliery closed. This venue runs football/cricket and bowls clubs, the Hall is newly furbished and has a bar and is a great place to hold an event. There is a Chinese and Indian takeaway, Hairdressers and a Post Office (limited service).

Barfrestone is a small village, it would have been called a 'Hamlet' long ago. It does have one of the oldest churches in Kent, which is well worth a visit and of course a 'Pub'.

Eythorne is mostly private properties but still with a great many ex miners, who have gone on to other careers.  It also has two churches, the local primary School, Resource Centre, which hosts WI meetings, Rainbows and Parish Council meetings, a shop/post office, Garage and Hairdressers. The Playing Field has Play Equipment, a Teen Shelter and a much needed footpath built for access.

The Parish Council has 11 Councillors and is well established and holds its meetings on the 4th Wednesday of every month, participation by the residents is always welcome. The Parish Council do allow a Public Question time at the end of the meeting and allow 3 minutes per person. The chairman is elected at the Annual General Meeting held in May by nominations and seconders of the Parish Council and the Council then elect on those proposed until a Chairman is agreed. The Annual Assembly is not a Council meeting but a meeting of Parish electors. The Chairman of the Council calls the Annual Assembly and will chair it.

Sub Committee meetings are held monthly and please refer to the Calendar of meetings which is displayed on all 3 Notice boards in the Parish and on the website. These meetings are held at the Resource Centre.

Please note that the Notice boards only have limited space and not all Committee Minutes are published on these, but you are more than happy to view these at the Clerk’s home as well as the web site. All Minutes are published after they have been approved by full Council at the monthly meeting.
